Jay-Z leaves Def Jam

SOURCE: http://www.hitsdailydouble.com

http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news06925

It was the night before Christmas and Jay-Z has decided to leave the house.

Def Jam Records President Shawn Carter, better known as rapper Jay-Z, announced today that he has chosen not to resume his post when his contract expires at the end of this year. He will, however, continue in his capacity as a recording artist for Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam. Jay-Z co-founded the Roc-A-Fella Records label in 1996.

Negotiations to renew his contract had gone back and forth over the past few months without resolution. The hip-hop entrepreneur has headed the label since 2005, signing hit acts such as Rihanna and Ne-Yo. Rumors have floated he might re-join either ex-colleague Rick Rubin at Columbia Records or former partner Lyor Cohen at Warner Music Group. A source familiar with his plans says instead he will focus on expanding his chain of 40/40 Nightclubs and other business ventures, as well as his recording career.

Jay-Z stated: “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have served as President of such a culturally-defining label as Def Jam over the last three years. During that time, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many of the world’s most dynamic artists and many of the most dedicated and talented executives in the music business today, including [IDJMG Chairman/ CEO] Antonio “L.A.” Reid. But now it’s time for me to take on new challenges. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy, helping to move the company into a new era of artistic success.”

Commented Reid: “Jay made it clear to us that he feels the time has come to take on different challenges in his life. While we regret his decision to move on, we certainly respect it. Since Jay joined us as President of Def Jam in 2005, we have all benefited from his leadership, sense of spirit and invaluable friendship. While he will continue to be one of our signature artists, he will nonetheless be missed in this executive capacity. The entire Island Def Jam family joins me in wishing him the very best in all of his future business endeavors.”

UPDATE: Statement by Chris Stokes

The accusations that Demario “Raz B” Thorton and Ricardo Thorton have made are vehemently false and hold no merit. I have recently stopped financially supporting both individuals along with assisting them with their criminal and legal matters which leads me to believe they are resentful and looking to benefit financially from this. My family is my first priority and the reason why I have been so supportive of them. In bringing these false claims, they have not only slandered me, they have also put me in a position to ensure that the truth is known and I will take all legal routes to protect myself, my family and my four children,” said Chris Stokes, CEO of The Ultimate Group. It’s also quite ironic that these statements were made only 2 weeks after they were denied admittance by a venue for an event I hosted in Beverly Hills,” added Stokes.

Mic Check Closes Its Doors

Mic Check - an event that showcased local San Diego artist had to shuts its doors due to a violent incident that occured on September 15th.

This is the report from the local news

San Diego Police are looking Sunday for a man accused of firing several shots into a crowd waiting outside a bar on El Cajon Boulevard, injuring three people shortly before midnight.According to San Diego Police Sgt. Bob Dare, a group of 20 to 25 people were standing outside the Shamrock Shack Bar waiting to go in, when a man approached them and then opened fire with a handgun. The shooter fled in a silver Toyota Land Cruiser and was described as Black, 5 feet 7 inches tall, and weighing approximately 145 pounds. He was wearing a black pull over sweatshirt with yellow writing and a T-shirt underneath, Dare said.

This is the statement from Big Daddy, one of the promoters of Mic Check

DUE TO THE INCIDENT LAST NITE @ MIC CHECK...WE HAVE DECIDED TO CLOSE THE DOORS FULL TIME ON THE PRODUCTION OF MIC CHECK. WE AS PROMOTERS & ARTISTS HAVE ALL HELPED EACH OTHER DURING THE PAST 8 MONTHS TO PROVIDE A SAFE PLACE FOR ALL ARTISTS OF ALL RACES TO PERFORM AT. UNFORTUNATELY SOME DON'T AGREE WITH WHAT YOU AS ARTISTS ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE. WE ONLY WANTED EVERYONE TO LIVE THE DREAM & MAYBE GETTING SIGNED.

IN ALL MY YEARS BEING INVOLVED IN MUSIC, IVE SEEN ARTISTS COME & GO..DURING THESE PAST MONTHS THE SCENE OF SAN DIEGO MUSIC HAS THRIVED & WAS UPLIFTED BY CERTAIN PRODUCTIONS IN HELPING THE MUSIC SCENE REACH A CERTAIN LEVEL. FROM NETWORKS URBAN LEGEND GET DOWN TO OUR MIC CHECKS, THESE WERE THE AVENUES THAT NO OTHER PROMOTER DARED TOUCH BECAUSE OF THE CONSEQUENCES IT MAY BRING.

SO NOW WHAT DO WE DO, WHERE DO WE PERFORM, WHERE DO WE GO FOR A SHOW THAT IS SAFE. THE ANSWER WE ALREADY NOW, NO WHERE. ITS JUST NOT SAFE NO MATTER WHERE WE DO ANY PRODUCTION. WHY? ASK YOUR NEIGHBOR IF YOU DONT KNOW THE ANSWER. PROMOTERS DONT EVEN WANT TO HELP WITH ANY LOCAL ARTISTS.

NETWORK, MYSELF, PHAT DOK & OTHERS HAVE TOOK THAT CHALLENGE TO TRY & PROMOTE EACH & EVERYONE OF YOU. WE CAN ONLY THANK ALL THE ARTISTS THAT HAVE SUPPORTED US AS PROMOTERS IN HELPING KEEP SD RAP & HIP HOP ALIVE. LIKE ALL GOOD THINGS IT MUST COME TO AN END. DONT STOP YOUR DREAM, KEEP MAKING THE GOOD MUSIC YOUVE BEEN & HOPEFULLY ONE DAY WE CAN ALL JUST GET TOGETHER THRU MUSIC & ONLY MUSIC...1 LOVE TO ALL OF YALL: BIG DADDY...

So basically this whole things sucks for everybody and some negative elements have succeeded in shutting down a positive event.

7 Strategies to Raise Your GPA this Semester

7 Strategies to Raise Your GPA this Semester

by John Wesley · 22 Comments

stack of booksGetting straight A’s won’t guarantee success, but it sure doesn’t hurt. A high GPA will help you make more money, pursue further education, or change career paths. If you’re going to spend many thousands of dollars on a college education, you might as well make the most of it. Right?

Being smart will help you get good grades, but it isn’t required. Neither is studying nonstop. The key to academic success is being disciplined and efficient in your study habits. These 7 strategies will help you raise your GPA while minimizing stress and overall study time.

1. Go to class - I know this one is mind-numbingly obvious but it’s important. Many professors lecture directly from PowerPoint and post the slides to the internet. This makes it tempting to skip class, download the lecture notes, and learn the material on your own. Although you can probably get away with this in easy courses, you’ll face problems in challenging ones. By skipping class, you miss out on a few important things:

  • Detailed verbal explanations that are key to understanding the material
  • The chance to ask questions and listen to the Q&A of other students
  • Special announcements
  • Opportunities for extra credit

It’s also important to consider how skipping class affects your reputation. In most classes, grades are somewhat subjective. This means that the grader’s perception of you can make or break your grade. If you frequently miss class, you’ll be perceived as someone who lacks respect for the professor and the subject matter. Why should they give you the benefit of the doubt or round that B+ up to an A-?

2. Sit in the front row - Not only will sitting in the front row build self confidence, it will automatically engage you in the lecture. You’ll appear to be an eager student and highly visible to the teacher. This will help your academic reputation and make it more likely you’ll develop a relationship with the professor. You’ll have a much easier time maintaining focus and will feel more like a participant than a passive observer.

3. Take notes by hand
- Another unfortunate side effect of the PowerPoint revolution is that it discourages students from taking notes. Taking notes by hand will improve your grades because a) it forces you to pay attention, and b) the physical act of writing aids memorization. If you take notes, you’ll find it much easier to stay engaged. Your notes also provide a point of reference that will help you build a mental link between a written concept and the professor’s verbal explanation. This is key for efficient studying.

4. Do a weekly review
- A common problem students encounter is trying to learn an enormous amount of material right before the midterm or final exam. This is practically impossible. You’ll find it much easier if you take a gradual approach to studying. At least once a week, review your notes starting from the beginning of the course. This only needs to take 15 or 20 minutes, just enough time to build familiarity with the material.

By doing a weekly review you’ll gradually memorize everything and will better understand how one concept builds on the next. Putting in small amounts of effort on a consistent basis will drastically reduce the amount of studying you need to do right before the test.

5. Go to office hours - Professors and TA’s usually make themselves available at regular times during the week for students to ask questions about assignments. Do yourself a favor by taking advantage of this opportunity. First, attending office hours will motivate you to get ahead on your work and prepare questions to ask. This will give you a huge edge in understanding problems that aren’t clearly explained in the lectures. Second, it will build your reputation as a high-effort student who deserves high grades.

6. Find smart people to work with
- In courses that involve group work, this is essential. No one wants to get stuck with a bunch slackers, have to do all the work themselves, and end up with a poor grade to show for it. The quality of the your learning experience is directly related to the attitudes of the people you work with. Working with smart people will facilitate discussion. The best way to understand an idea is talking about it with other intelligent people.

Who you work with also affects your academic reputation. If you associate with students that aren’t interested in learning, teachers and graders will assume you feel the same way. It’s also a great way to connect with people who have similar interests and ambitions.

7. Avoid all-nighters
- Generally, having to pull an all-nighter means that you slacked off all semester and need to fit 3 months of learning into one day. If you use a gradual study strategy this will never be necessary. All-nighters don’t work! Yes, it might be possible to get a good grade if the course is easy, but it’s much more likely that your grade will be significantly lower. All-nighters harm performance because they make you tired and stressed. You’ll also forget most of what you learn right after the test, decreasing the practical value of your education.

Hip-hop history class @ SDSU

http://media.www.thedailyaztec.com/media/storage/paper741/news/2007/08/29/City/HipHop.History.Class-2941562.shtml

When you think of history class, you think of the American Revolution, not the hip-hop revolution.

But for San Diego State students, history classes can cover the movement of hip-hop from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific coast as well as the United States expansion from east to west.

For the first time ever, SDSU will offer the History and Culture of Hip Hop during the fall semester. The goal of the course is for students to be able to critically analyze hip-hop as well as understand its beginnings and culture.

The class, which is being offered by the Africana Studies Department, is the first of its kind among San Diego colleges.

"Hip-hop is a culture, it's something you live," class professor Jahsun Edmonds said. "Hip-hop is an extension of black existence, at least after the civil rights era. I grew up in the hip-hop era and studied hip-hop from people who live it."

Edmonds said that there are five elements of hip-hop, which include: emceeing, deejay-ing, B-boying (the dancing aspect), graffiti and knowledge.

Edmonds said that he wants his students to learn accurate history about the culture of hip-hop, and that students should not expect him to fabricate details or background information.

Africana studies junior Dorienda Cooper said she's expecting to learn about where hip-hop emerged from and where it is today and is interested in the struggles hip-hop has faced. Pre-journalism freshman Hayden Prante said that he thinks it will be a different kind of class that should discuss what is good about hip-hop today.

The class will also prominently feature guest speakers throughout the semester, including original San Diego dancers and other hip-hop artists.

One of the highlights of the program will be Dennis Newsome, a master of Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian dance.

The class is offered at 7 p.m. on Mondays in Storm Hall room 351. The class is still open and accepting students. For more information, look up the Fall 2007 class schedule at www.sdsu.edu.
